You will always get different answers for the question: What is your worth? It also depends on the person you ask. So, what is my true worth actually. Well, I would share the story of a movie that helped me arrive at the answer. The satirical work of Shoojit Sircar- Gulabo Sitabo. I leave no chance of discussing this movie because the movie might be a bit too long, but I found a gem hidden in the storyline.
Among all the characters, my favorite was none other than Mr. Amitabh Bachchan who plays the role of Mirza, a rapacious cantankerous old man. Everybody may have their own take away from the movie or maybe they watch with popcorn and then hop onto another show without delving deeper. But for me it’s a different experience every time I watch a show. It tends to linger in my mind for a long time.
The last scene of Gulabo Sitabo kept reeling in my mind even when the movie was long over. Mirza’s acquisitiveness made him sell stuff from Fatima Mahal, a 100+ year old palace owned by his begum, which now stands in dilapidated state in some lonely pocket of Lucknow. He would sell whatever his hands could lay on to get some money, even the light bulbs would not be spared. The movie ends with a scene where Mirza’s situation is so miserable that he had to sell his favorite chair from that palace for his living. He sold it to a ragman for Rs. 250. That same chair found its way into ‘Galleria Antiques’ with a price tag of Rs 1,35,000!!!!!!!!
Did you notice the stark reality of both the situations? The chair was sold at a mere cost to the ragman while the same object was worth in lakhs in the eyes of an antiquarian. An individual’s true worth emerges in right situations or among right people. It is not in everybody’s capacity to realize the true worth of people.
This is a take-away for all my readers -if you ever feel dejected or unworthy then change your situation or surrounding and may be then you will be worth priceless!
