Flavors of Nostalgia

A young boy named Sameer lived in a small town, nestled between huge mountains and winding rivers. The life in his hometown moved at a leisurely pace, untouched by the buzz of modern conveniences. He was born in an era when food delivery apps did not exist, people strolled through the narrow streets looking for seasonal fruits, fresh vegetables, and steaming street snacks. Families gathered to share homemade meals rather than opting for takeout. Summers were filled with the earthy scent of fresh produce, the sounds of bicycle bells, and the chatter of neighbours sharing stories over their garden fences.

Sameer cherished the simple joys of his childhood—like the ice cream cones with colourful scoops in different flavours, tubes of colourful cool beverages which were famously called Pepsi, a glass jar full of tangy orange and mango flavoured Rasna, fruit custard, and roasted aam panna. He eagerly savoured all his favourites every summer evening. He looked forward to dinner gatherings, where he could enjoy special recipes usually reserved for guests. The cosy, warm dinners and playful picnics were all about good food and fun.

As Sameer grew older, the world around him was changing. As the technology advanced the town transformed. It was the era of digital transformation. With the growing online businesses, things were now easily available and accessible to all.

Soon, a new ice cream parlour opened in Sameer’s town. It offered a dazzling array of flavours accessible with just a tap on a smartphone screen. Gone were the days of waiting in line, eagerly anticipating the ‘scoop of the day’.

Initially, Sameer rejoiced at the convenience. He was thrilled to receive his favourite ice cream flavour within minutes of placing the order. The changing pace of the world amazed him.  He started indulging in ice cream after ice cream whenever he wished and wherever he desired. After a few months, the ice cream was the same but something felt amiss. The once-special treat began to lose its magic. Each scoop became just another fleeting pleasure, devoid of the joy and anticipation he once felt.

One day, while scrolling through his phone, Sameer stumbled upon an old photograph. It captured a moment from his childhood—a radiant smile as he held a simple, single-scoop ice cream cone. Something stirred within him as he gazed at the image, reminiscing about the excitement and delight he once found in the smallest of things.

Filled with nostalgia, Sameer decided to take a break from the digital world and revisit the ice cream parlor. As he stood in line, surrounded by the laughter of children and the scent of freshly baked waffle cones, he felt a sense of anticipation he hadn’t experienced in years.

When it was finally his turn, Sameer ordered a single scoop of his favorite flavor. As he took his first bite, he was transported back to his carefree days of childhood. The taste was sweeter, the experience richer, and the joy more profound than he had ever remembered.

At that moment, Sameer realized the true value of simplicity and the importance of savouring life’s little pleasures. As he walked home, licking his ice cream cone with a newfound appreciation, he couldn’t help but smile, knowing that some things are truly timeless, no matter how much the world may change.

Modern conveniences have provided a touch of ease to our lives. However, abusing the conveniences takes away the joy from simple things. What do you say?
