An Impossible Dream

Anshika got her keys out of her purse to unlock the door. It was a long hectic day for her, and she simply wanted to drop dead on her bed. Her heart skipped a beat. The door was already unlocked, she simply turned the doorknob, and opened it with a creak. The hall was dark. She switched the lights and looked around quickly to see if anything had been taken. Not a single piece has moved from its position. “Who could have broken into my house and what if he is still present?” wondered Anshika. Not a sign of a soul could be found. Then she decided to check her bedroom upstairs. Instinctively, she picked up a hockey stick and tip-toed toward her bedroom. “Someone is there for sure,” she thought to herself as she could see a glimmer of light underneath the closed door. Holding the hockey stick firmly in one hand, she slowly pushed the door open with the other. She gasped in disbelief.

Suddenly she lost all her strength and the hockey stick fell on the floor with a loud thud. A man was standing near her bed holding a photo frame in his hand. He immediately looked up. They both stood still with their eyes fixed upon each other. There was pin-drop silence, but they could easily hear the chaos of their hearts and minds. The man in the photo embracing Anshika is now in front of her and her eyes seem to be full of questions, evident from the creases on her forehead. He realized Anshika has grown pale and thin bearing the weight of all these years. She has lost so much weight and her lively spirit. But she still is the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. They were always meant to be together until things went haywire.

She drops to her knees and starts to weep. The man ambles towards her and sits next to her. They embrace each other like in old times. Yes, nothing materialistic was taken but her peace, happiness, and the spirit to live were taken from her the day her boyfriend, Karan vanished into thin air. Anshika’s life shattered like a deck of cards. She shifted to a small town in Kolkata where nobody knew her. She forgot how to live, she was merely breathing and dragging her body all these years in the gleaming hope of meeting Karan someday. Now the same man is standing in front of her bearing the signs of aging and hardship on his tanned body. She wondered what could have happened to him. She was drowning in the tsunami of emotions upon seeing Karan. She was confused, happy, relieved, and angry all at the same time.

Karan finally gathered some courage and muttered, “Annie.” All these years she was desperate to hear the name Annie, she was Karan’s Annie. The name by which only Karan called her in this whole world. “I never told you but five years back I was assigned to work as an undercover agent for a confidential mission. I had everything planned for us. I wanted to propose to you for marriage once the mission was complete. The mission was in its last leg when someone from the team betrayed me, and things went south for me. Since then, I am being chased by government agents. I have been on the run for five years, but you were always running in my mind. You are the one who kept me alive. There were times when I thought to give up everything but the dream to be with you kept me going. My life’s mission is to catch that traitor and prove my innocence. All these years I did everything under the sun to find you. I just wanted to see you once.”

Just as he muttered those words, there was a loud bang on the hefty main door and lights flashed into the room from outside. He has been tracked down. They both knew they had no time left now. “I cannot endanger your life, I have to leave once again, I am sorry,” Karan spoke helplessly. He got up to escape from the back door, but Anshika turned with lightning speed and held Karan’s hand,” You are not leaving me this time, without you, I am empty like a living dead. From hereon I am with you whatever may come.” Suddenly the bedroom door collapsed and three masked men with firearms approached Karan.

Karan immediately took his position and attacked them with his swift moves. He was too fast for them. They could not react in time and thus hit the floors immediately. He was definitely the best, a decorated officer and ambitious too, had everything gone according to his plan, life with Annie would have been so different now. Anshika shook him to reality, and they firmly held each other’s hands and vanished into the darkness of the night through the back door. While leaving everything behind, Anshika thought to herself,” I always dreamt of a happy settled life with you, but fate has something else in store for us. We may have to be on the run for the rest of our lives but being with you matters above all. Finally, I got back everything that had been taken from me.”
